Brain Dump — Definition

A brain dump is writing out everything on your mind in one unstructured pass, without sorting, grouping or editing, in order to externalise mental load.

Where the term comes from

Informal term, though the mechanism connects directly to cognitive offloading and to the Zeigarnik effect.

Why it matters

Masicampo and Baumeister (2011) found unfinished goals intrude on attention until a specific plan exists — and that writing that plan resolved the intrusion without the task being done.

The common mistake

Sorting while dumping. Categorising mid-dump turns a ten-minute unload into an organising session, which is why most people try it once.

What it looks like in practice

Ten minutes, one page, everything. Deadlines, the dentist, the thing you said you would send on Monday, the conversation you are dreading. Unsorted and unedited. What comes out at minute seven is usually what was actually weighing on you.
