Cognitive Load — Definition

Cognitive load is the total amount of working memory a task demands at one time, including both the task itself and any information you are holding in mind alongside it.

Where the term comes from

Formalised in cognitive load theory in educational psychology, and closely related to research on working memory limits.

Why it matters

It explains why holding fourteen competing priorities in your head feels harder than reading the same fourteen off a page. The items are identical; the load is not. This is the mechanism behind most of the benefit of writing things down.
