Executive Function — Definition

Executive function is the set of mental processes used to plan, initiate, sequence and monitor goal-directed behaviour, including working memory and task initiation. Most task systems demand it, which is why they burden the people whose executive function is already stretched.

Where the term comes from

A long-standing construct in neuropsychology. Barkley's model is among the most influential frameworks for how it relates to ADHD.

Why it matters

Most task management systems demand executive function — deciding priorities, maintaining categories, remembering to review. For people whose executive function is stretched, the system itself becomes a load rather than a support.

The common mistake

Recommending more elaborate systems to people who struggle with executive function. Complexity increases the demand on the exact resource that is limited.

What it looks like in practice

Setting up a task app with projects, tags and a weekly review is itself an executive-function task. That is why the setup often gets completed enthusiastically and the maintenance never does — the app is asking for the resource that was already the constraint.
