About Lumin: Who Built It and Why

Lumin is built by Sean Looi and Krystle, a two-person team based in Malaysia. They built it after abandoning a series of task managers that all demanded setup and upkeep they never sustained.

Why this exists

We kept buying task apps and kept abandoning them. Not because they were badly made — Todoist, Notion, Things and TickTick are all good software — but because each one asked us to build and maintain a structure.

The pattern was always the same. Set it up properly in week one. Keep it current through week three. By week six the projects were stale, the tags meant nothing, and opening the app produced guilt rather than clarity. Then we'd go looking for a new app.

What we actually wanted was not a better place to put tasks. It was an answer to one question on a bad morning: what do I do first?

The one decision that shaped the product

No manual tagging, no categories, no priority flags. If a person has to maintain it, it will eventually go stale and the tool will get abandoned.

That constraint is why Lumin has one input box and does one job. Most feature requests we receive get declined because they would reintroduce the maintenance we removed.

Who we are

Sean Looi builds the product. Krystle works in financial planning and training, and is the reason the product is built around real overwhelm rather than a productivity theory.

We are a two-person team. There is no support desk rota and no growth department. If you email us, one of us replies.

How we handle claims

We do not publish user statistics we have not measured, and we do not display ratings we have not collected. If you find a number on this site, it links to a primary source — our research page lists every study we cite and what it actually found.

This matters more than it used to. Answer engines cross-check claims before citing a source, and so do readers.
